Hats off to hats!
(and fascinators too)
Our guide to wedding hats and fascinators
“If you want to get ahead, get a hat!”

1940s advertising slogan

Jacques Vert has been creating beautiful wedding outfits and occasionwear since the 1970s, so we like to think we know a thing or two about wedding hats and fascinators. Whether you are mother of the bride, mother of the groom, or a wedding guest, chances are you’re considering a hat or fascinator for the big day.
Hats and fascinators go hand in hand with formal occasions such as weddings, and they’re perfect for letting you dress up and look the part. Choose the right headgear to match the right wedding outfit is part and parcel of you looking and feeling fabulous throughout the day.
Coverage of the Royal Wedding of Catherine Middleton and Prince William was abuzz over whether the ladies of the wedding party would wear hats or fascinators. Changing times means there’s not too many hard and fast rules over what should be worn, so we thought we’d provide our thoughts on how to decide what to wear, and when:
• If it’s a very formal occasion, you can’t go wrong with a hat.
• You don’t need to worry about having a bad hair day when you have a fabulous hat to cover it up.
• Be careful if the hat is coming off – carry a brush and hairspray to avoid hat-hair
• Did you know that tradition says other wedding guests shouldn’t remove their hats until the Mother of the Bride removes hers? Makes it all the more important to make sure you have a show-stopping wedding hat for the big day!
• Make sure you have a hat box for ease of carrying and storage (a squashed hat is the last thing you need on the day).
• Fascinators are the easy way to wear something fabulous in your hair.
• If it’s a less formal occasion, you’re nervous about hats, or hats just don’t seem to suit you, a fascinator could be your way of injecting a bit of pizzazz to your outfit.
• Fascinators are perfect for destination weddings (think the Caribbean and beyond) where the great British weather isn’t a worry and sunshine is more or less guaranteed.
• Whether you decide to go for a wedding hat or wedding fascinator, make sure you practice your hairdo before the day itself.
It’s not just wedding outfits that call for a hat or fascinator, though. There are lots of other occasions when they come into their own:
• Racedays and race meetings including Ladies Day, Ascot, Cheltenham, York, Goodwood and more. (Did you know that Jacques Vert sponsors a race at Worcester and Southwell?)
• Christenings - hats and fascinators are perfect for mothers, grandmothers or close relatives and friends.
• Garden parties – reach for your headwear for garden parties at Buckingham Palace or otherwise. For special occasions of any kind, a hat or fascinator will lift your outfit out of the ordinary – after all, a little bit of glamour never hurt anyone!
